Born at Scorton just north of Garstang, England in 1861. From an early age his interest grew in gardens and planting which would influence his future career. Indeed his practice was based in Lancaster and London where his sons, John and Prentice, worked with their father from the planning stage of Stanley Park, Blackpool and the two crescents and sunken gardens on the Promenade at South Shore, Blackpool.
